• More than 26 million Americans have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and most don’t know it.

• Half of Americans will develop kidney disease in their lifetime.

• Currently, one in eight Marylanders has kidney disease, and thousands remain at risk.

• 96,000 people nationally are lined up for kidney transplants fewer while 17,000 receive one each year and about 4,500 die waiting

• One in three Americans over age 20 – 73 million people – are at risk for kidney disease.

•10-12 Marylanders die daily awaiting a life-saving organ.

• Approximately 2,065 Marylanders await a kidney for transplantation.

• Nationally, nearly 3,000 new patients are added to the kidney waiting list each month.

• Over 60 percent of dialysis patients in Maryland are African American.

• 151 of the 550 people screened last year by NKF-MD demonstrated significant results.

• Diabetes and uncontrolled high blood pressure are the leading risk factors for kidney failure.

• Kidney disease can be detected early through simple screening.

• Knowing your numbers for blood pressure, sugar (blood glucose) and creatinine.

Foundation facts

• The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland is the area’s only voluntary health agency dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of kidney and urinary tract diseases.

• The organization improves the health and well-being of patients and families affected by these diseases, and increases the availability of organs for transplant.

• It also funds medical research, conducts public education, provides free health screenings and offers emergency financial assistance to low-income dialysis and transplant patients
